Trainer's Biography

Barry Johnston

Barry Johnston has over 15 years of experience in the hazardous packaging and shipping industry. His knowledge in the area of biohazardous packaging and shipping is extensive. Training clients include major esoteric, research and state labs as well as biotech companies, federal government, national lab and clinical trial groups, couriers and numerous college and universities. He has developed packaging, and consulted companies and organizations in the pharmaceutical, clinical and diagnostic lab, biotechnology, device and chemical industries. His experience in this field started in the late 80's as a product manager for hazardous material packaging products. In 1995, when the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for infectious substances came into effect, he designed and developed a line of packaging for infectious and diagnostic specimens which started the EXAKT-PAK line of packages for EXAKT Technologies, Inc. With EXAKT he trained various groups and individuals and lectured on the regulations at industry conferences and in various trade magazines. In 2000 he concentrated his efforts on the training and started HighQ LLC.

To keep current on regulations, as well as industry practices and developments, he maintains contacts in the governmental agencies, carriers and packaging companies. As an independent instructor he is able to bring an unbiased perspective to his seminars. This gives him the unique freedom to advise his students on the best package for their needs and also to instruct in all the carriers practices. While there currently is no DOT certification for trainers he has been trained by the DOT and IATA and follows all the guidelines of 49CFR 172.700 (subpart H) and IATA Section 1.5.
